Govt. has introduced special program to enhance public transport - Deputy Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna

by Ranga Chandrarathne

Government has introduced a special programme to enhance the Public Transport System of the country to provide a better service to the nation, said the Deputy Minister of Transport, Lasantha Alagiyawanna at the ceremonial opening of the five public wide screen televisions at the Maradana Railway Station last Friday. The Cabinet had granted approval to move ahead with this programme.

This is the second phase of the instalment of televisions under the programme "Gamane Gimana Nivana Madya Sathkaraya" conceptualised by the former Minister of Media and Information, Reginald Cooray.

The first phase of this programme was initiated at the Railway Station, Polgahawela by the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation.

The Deputy Minister said that the National Transport Service had failed to contribute significantly to the development process and the national income of the country. The Government has identified the transport sector as a vital service which needs rapid improvement in the light of Road blocks and traffic congestion even though the 5% of the population own private vehicles, Minister pointed out.

Under the leadership and the guidance of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, the Ministry of Transport has accepted the challenge of improving the railway and the bus services to cope with the increasing demand for public transport.

The Director General of the Rupavahini Corporation, Nishantha Ranathunge said that the Rupavahini Corporation was able to make several social contributions during the past two months.

It had collected and distributed stationery necessary for schoolchildren in flood-stricken areas and also donated houses and supported financially, families who lost their parents. The Rupavahini Corporation functions not only as a media institution, but as an establishment which is concerned about the well-being of the nation.

The Chairman of the Rupavahini Corporation M. M. Zuhair, the Chairman of ITN and Lakhanda Newton Gunarathne, the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Media Kanthi Wijetunge were also present.
