Kalutara group correspondent Martin Wickremesinghe was one of the most erudite scholars in Sri Lankan literature said Professor J. B. Dissanayake. He was addressing a gathering celebrating Martin Wickremesinghe's 114th birth anniversary and opening of the exhibition of books at Kalutara Public Library. The meeting was held at Town Hall premises Kalutara recently. Professor Dissanayake further said that in this world there are certain people who are born just to live and die. Some others will attempt to alter the ways of thinking of society. While yet another group of people who read widely and develop their thinking processes and become powerful scholars can revolutionise the whole process of thinking; such a personality was late Martin Wickremesinghe, he said. He was able to turn around the existing society by his work such as gamperaliya. His was a simple language which he used to perform this magic of conversion, while some other scholars who read such literary work such as Amawatura and Buthsarana during the Polonnaruwa period, got themselves dragged into the ancient method of thinking. Martin Wickremesinghe took the other way about which was able to win the hearts of the many. This is evident through his work Sathwasanthathiya that he believed in the evolutionary theory. He also believed the evolution of the language accordingly. The depth of the meaning of any language results in this process of evolution. The Sinhala language is progressing daily and therefore should be treated as a living phenomenon. Therefore it is our duty to protect it so that it will not die. Wickremesinghe created new thought and ideas. He believed that the use of simple language is not the ungrammatical, even though the method of using it appears to be different, even though he used the spoken forum of the language he was able to use it grammatically. Sunil Seneviratne the U.C. Member Kalutara, Dr. Ranga Wickremesinghe, P.A. Mathupala, Dayapala Jayaneththi, Malinga Seneviratne and Mrs. Kosaly Ranasinghe also spoke. |
