A discussion on Safety and Security strategies pertaining to Sri Lanka Ports & Airports was held yesterday at the Ministry of Ports and Aviation.

The discussion had been called on the instructions of Ports, Aviation, Information and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera.

The participants at the discussions led by Ministry Secretary Ariyaratne Hewage were Vice Admiral Daya Sandagiri, Navy Commander, Air Vice Marshal Donald Perera, Air Force Commander, Dileepa Wijesundara, Chairman, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, M.L.A.M. Hisbullah Chairman Airport & Aviation Services Limited, Air Vice Marshal Paddy Mendis, Civil Aviation Authority, Director General Nimalasiri and several other key officials.

According to media release issued by the Ministry of Ports and Aviation Trade and Development Agency in United States of America has already expressed its willingness to assist on matters pertaining to the safety and security of Sri Lanka Ports and Airports, providing expert advice, technical assistance, training of officers and to assist procuring financial assistance for training purposes. Last week, a delegation representing the Trade and Development Agency in the US had discussed matters relevant in detail with Minister Mangala Samaraweera.

At present the Security and Safety of the Ports had been entrusted on the Sri Lanka Navy and the Safety and Security of the Bandaranaike International Airport has been entrusted to the Air Force.

Security in the Air Port now functions without a military look as in a civil airport, but the Air Force has prepared a special security programme jointly with the Aviation Authority Security unit, the Air Force Commander Air Vice Marshal Donald Perera said.

However, the internal security of the Air Port is still provided by the Aviation and Air Port Authority. The Navy Commander said a systematic security net is needed to provide security to the Colombo Port by the Sri Lanka Navy.

The Law structure pertaining to the ports are laws formulated sequence to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and with regard to Air Port security, the Standards are equilateral to the law structure followed by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority, the Air Port and Aviation Services Limited, Civil Aviation Authority and the Sri Lanka Customs will jointly operate in implementing the Safety and Security measures in Ports and Airports and the Port and Aviation Ministry is to monitor and evaluate the progress.
