President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has appointed Prof. A.V. Suraweera as Chairman of the National Education Commission. Prof. Suraweera, M.A, Phd. (Ceylon) Fellow in writing (Iowa, USA) was awarded D.Litt. by the University of Sri Jayawardhanapura and the position of Emeritus Professor by the university. With five years teaching experience in leading schools, he joined the Sinhala Department of the Vidyodaya University in 1960 as a lecturer. He resigned in June 1994 as senior professor on the President's invitation to contest the General Election from Gampaha district. After he was elected to Parliament he was appointed Deputy Minister, Cultural and Religions Affairs, which he held for six years. Prof. Suraweera functioned as Director, Institute of Aesthetic Studies, University of Kelaniya for some time. He has done research at the Universities of Iowa, (USA) Kent (UK) and was guest Professor of Sinhala, University of London for one year. Prof. Suraweera has acquired recognition as a distinguished scholar and writer. He has authorised over 50 books in Sinhala and English and won many literary awards in addition to publishing research and scholarly articles in local and foreign journals. In 1989, Prof. Suraweera was awarded the distinguished title of Kala Keerthi, being the highest honour conferred by the President in the cultural field. He also functioned as the Director General of the Central Cultural Fund for nearly three years. He now serves as the Rajarata University Chancellor. The National Education Commission is directly responsible to the President in formulating planning and policy including all matters of formal an non formal education at all levels. |
