EDB support to develop apparel exports sector

by Irangika Range

The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) is facilitating key local garment manufacturers and exporters to participate in the "ASAP Global Sourcing Show" and the "Magic Show" as a part of its program to support and develop the apparel exports sector in the country.

The ASAP Global Souring Show will be held from August 29 to September 1 while the Magic Show will be held from August 30 to September 2 at Las Vegas, USA.

These are the world's largest garment and textile shows conducted every year and provides match making sessions, sales assistance between buyers and exhibitors, educational seminars and US customer clearance service.

The EDB has identified the apparel sector as a primary focus area for achieving the projected US$ 4.5 billion export by 2007. An official of the EDB said this will also provide good opportunities to meet buyers particularly those from the US apparel sector.

"Apparel exports accounted for over 50 percent of Sri Lanka's total exports in 2003(US$ 2241 million) and continued to be the leading export sector. USA remained the major buyer of Sri Lankan apparel with a 64 percent market share," she said.

"Sri Lankan textile and garment manufacturers and exporters will exhibit Ladies and children's wear at the booth. Ten garment and textile exporters participated in the ASAP Apparel Fair last August and executed orders amounting to Rs. 1,360 million," she said.

"EDB has been organising the Sri Lankan Pavilion from 2003 to the ASAP fair while this year the EDB will participate for the first time in the Magic Show. The EDB also provides PR work for small and medium sale companies," she said.

Last August ASAP show attracted 4,000 buyers and 200 exhibitors representing 248 companies from over 35 countries.

Over 300 full package apparel factories from the top 40 producing countries are expected to meet and conduct business with global buyers under one roof during the world's largest apparel trade week.
