US funds projects in Ampara, Batticaloa The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has invested US $3.6 million since USAID initiated poverty elevation programs and infrastructure development projects in Sri Lanka since March 2003. Over 150 grant agreements, mostly with local organisations have been signed for this purpose. Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Colombo, James F. Entwistle, visited six projects in Ampara and Batticaloa this week. Entwistle met residents of Muwangala, one of four Grama Nildhari divisions in which USAID is rehabilitating nearly two dozen irrigation canal sluice gates, to double the arable land available for sugarcane and paddy cultivation. Entwistle inaugurated the expanded SWOAD (Social Welfare Organisation Ampara District) English training centre in Akkaraipattu, signed a grant to provide boats and equipment to three fishing societies in Oluvil, and planted a tree at a community centre in Sammanthurai. Entwistle also travelled to Batticaloa to launch a National Youth Services Council computer training centre. While in Batticaloa he presented furniture and equipment to the Batticaloa Chamber of Commerce. "These projects represent a one hundred thousand dollar investment by the people of the United States in the future of more than 27,000 Sri Lankans", said Entwistle. "The absence of war has made these initiatives possible," he said. |
