Priyantha's solo exhibition at Wendt To "See things as they are" in pursuit of truth, is what artist Priyantha Weerasuriya attempts to do in his life and work. Weerasuriya, whose fourth solo exhibition opens at the Harold Pieris Gallery of the Lionel Wendt on June 18, says the path he has taken is a difficult one, but has its rewards.
Not surprisingly, Buddhism is the theme of this exhibition. At a first glance these works may appear to be complex, but they do not offered Buddhist traditions, Weerasuriya says. The 24 paintings are in different media, including clay, charcoal and oils on canvas. His previous exhibition at the Finomenal Gallery at Galle Face Court, was on the theme of "Love and Suppression". Has gained admission to the Camberwell College of Art in the UK, where he hopes to complete his studies in Art. He participated in the "Telegraph Art Festival" in London in 2002.
Born in Nittambuwa, Weerasuriya (25) had his early education at Urapola Central College, where he excelled in art. He later worked in the tourist hotel industry, during which time his interest in the subject grew. He was further encouraged by the response to his work when it was featured on Swarnavahini's "Sundara Senasurada" programme. He held his first solo exhibition at Crescat Blud, Colombo. The upcoming exhibition continuoes till June 20.
