Alert in Assam after rebels demand money from tea industry

GUWAHATI, India, Monday (AFP) Federal troops are on high alert in tea plantations in India's northeastern state of Assam after separatists served extortion notices on a number of companies, police said Monday.

A police spokesman said the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) had demanded extortion money from at least 20 medium to big tea companies owning plantations in eastern Assam's Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts.

"According to our reports, the ULFA has demanded amounts ranging from one million rupees (22,000 dollars) and above depending on the size of the plantation," said a senior police official who did not wish to be identified. "We are keeping a close watch on all the gardens that had received the extortion demands," the official said. "Security forces have been alerted all along tea estates that are vulnerable to militant threats."
