Layton Cup boxing begins today The Layton Cup Boxing Tournament conducted by the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka will commence today at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, Kotahena. This is the third major championship for the current year following the novices meet and the intermediate championships. All finals of the Layton Cup boxing meet will be worked off on Friday. Former President of the ABA Jayakumar Thangavelu, DIG of Police Legal Range will be the chief guest. The Layton Cup meet was originated in the year 1942 in the honour of Admiral Sir Jeffery Layton the Commander of Eastern Allied Naval Fleet during the 2nd World War, with the intention of improving the quality of boxing. The sterling silver cast Layton Cup is awarded to the best boxer of this meet. In 1942 Gunner L. Harrison of Ceylon Army had been awarded it while in 2003 A. K. G. K. Sameera of Unichela Sports Club, Panadura won it. Meanwhile the L. V. Jayaweera Memorial Cup Boxing Tournament conducted by the Schools Boxing Association of Sri Lanka will be held from June 24 to 27 at the Seevali Madya Maha Vidyalaya, Hidellana, Ratnapura commencing at 4.30 p.m. each day. This meet was originated in 1972 as a concept of 2 school masters N. Thambimuttu of St. Michael's, Polwatte and Donald Munasinghe of Arethusa Wellawatte and Mahiyangana Maha Vidyalaya with the intention of eradicating fear from entering the boxing ring for the first time. It was open exclusively only to school boys who had never entered the ring before except inter-house meet. In the inaugural year in 1972 Mahiyangana Maha Vidyalaya who came to Colombo for the first time won the championship. They were trained by their Science Master Donald Munasinghe. Last year Seevali MMV, Ratnapura won the cup. |
