News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | President commended for Constitutional Assembly proposal by Chamikara Weerasinghe New Left Front (NLF) Leader Dr. Wickremabahu Karunaratne yesterday commended President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga for undertaking the task of forming a Constitutional Assembly to amend the electoral system with the intention of abolishing the Executive Presidency. Explaining the NLF's stand in relation to some points made by the President in her Address to the Nation, Saturday, he stressed the importance of abolishing executive powers. Dr. Wickremabahu said: "It is worthwhile to have an electoral system conducive for a democratic set-up with proportional representation of political parties. "President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has a responsibility to remove the Government's dictatorial powers so that she may establish a federal-democratic state," he said. Asked his comments on the position taken by the Government to engage in peace talks on the basis of a permanent solution as against the LTTE's focus on the Interim Self Governing Authority, Dr. Wickremabahu said the talks may be based on establishing a federal-democratic state. Dr. Wickremabahu praised the President for giving priority to North-East rehabilitation and restructure, and added that it will be important to ensure people's participation in the process. He said the Government, SLMC and the LTTE should promote the North-East development plans. |
