SLEA Annual Sessions on June 18

The Annual Sessions of the Sri Lanka Economic Association (SLEA) will be held at the BMICH on June 18 and 19. SLEA President Prof. A. D. V. de S. Indraratna said the SLEA holds its annual sessions on current economic issues. "Each year's sessions are aimed to discuss a wide range of important topics on economic development. It also holds monthly public seminars, regional seminars and workshops highlighting major issues of the economy to SLEA members, the corporate sector, government and civil society," he said.

"The major objective of the seminar is to discuss and analyse opportunities and challenges faced by Sri Lanka in a globalised world. The seminar proceedings will be published to increase awareness of policy makers, planners and others committed to human development," he said.

"The theme this year is "Human Development in a knowledge based society". The special feature will be to honour Dr. Gamini Corea, Dr. H. N. S. Karunatilake and Dr. J. V. Kelegama for their service to the country's economy. Three postgraduate students will also receive awards for their good performances. We expect over 250 social science professionals, academic community, government and private sector professionals, research community and members to be present", he said.

The highlight of the inaugural session will be the keynote address by the chief guest, Chairman of the South Asia Centre for Policy Studies, Prof. Rehman Sobhan. The inaugural address will be delivered by the Minister of Finance Dr.Sarath Amunugama while the president's address will be given by the President of SLEA Prof. A. D. V. Indraratna.

There will be five technical sessions. Critical Thresholds for Sustained Growth, An Overview will be chaired by Prof. B. Hewavitharana Vice President, SLEA while Dr. Nimal Sanderatne will speak on Human Development and Growth. The resource persons would be Director Statistics, Central bank Dr. Anila Bandaranaike and the Former Governor of the Central Bank Dr. H. N. S. Karunatileke

The second session will be on Globalisation and Trade, chaired by Prof. S. S. Colombage, Vice President, SLEA. Prof. Mohan Munasinghe from the World Bank will speak on Electricity Within Reach of All while Dr. H. N. Thenuwara from the Central Bank will speak on Financial Service as a Facilitator for Services Reach out to the Poor.

The resource person this session will be the Management Consultant Ranel T. Wijesinghe. Innovative Reforms in Health and Education Policy and Planning will be the theme of the third session chaired by Vice-President, SLEA T. S. N. Fernando. Porf. Swarna Jayaweera, CENWOR will speak on Education and Human Development while Consultant, WB Dr. Daya Samarasinghe will speak on Health Sector Reform: Where are we? The facilitator for this session will be Dr. Pat Alailima.

Technology and Productivity is the theme of the fourth session to be chaired by Vice President SLEA Dr. Pat Alailima. Head of the Institute of Computer Technology Prof. V. K. Samaranayake will speak on Information and Poverty Alleviation while Dr. Sunil Chandrasiri will speak on Technology and Productivity. The facilitator will be Dr. Harsha de Silva from the DFCC Bank. The student session will be chaired by Dr. H. N. S. Karunatileke.

The final technical session on Competitiveness and Conducive Environment will be chaired by Vice President, SLEA Dr. Sunil Chandrasiri while Mahendra Amarasuriya, Chairman of Commercial Bank will speak on "Is Sri Lanka's Private Sector geared to meet competition in a knowledge-based Global Market? Dr. Anura Ekanayake of Unilevers will speak on Competition, Industry and the Consumer Policy Issues and Challenges.

The facilitator at this session will be Prof. S. S. Colombage from the Open University. Prof. A. D. V. de S. Indraratna will chair the closing session including the presentation of awards.
