Galle citizens to welcome Ministers, Governors and MPs

Galle Fort World Heritage Protection Society (GFWHPS) is making arrangements to welcome the Minister of Cultural Affairs and National Heritage and the Ministers of the Southern Province, MPs, the new Mayor of Galle and Governors in conjunction with their 3rd Grand Public Meeting to be held in Galle Fort on Saturday June 12.

Citizens of Galle had been in the forefront defending their 38th Monument World Archaeological and Heritage Site facing several ODDs and life threats for the last three to four years with regard to conversions of houses contravening all laws and by opening vice centres liquor bars, casinos and hotels in the midst of educational, religious, cultural and residential population.

The defeat of the UNF Government can be attributed to the sale of archaeological, heritagial properties and acres of land along the beautiful beaches.

In the South regions even selling several beach frontage lands the government had miserably failed to fill in the empty coffers of the Treasury.

The World Heritage Sites and beaches are facing the biggest threats towards destruction of our culture, educational religious and moral values of the younger generation, a press release from the society said.

Considering the Galle Fort as an outstanding, architectural heritage and archaeological monument site both UNESCO and COSMOS declared it as a valuable worthy world heritage. The historical importance of the Fort is unchallengeable and Sri Lankans are unaware of it.

Beyond a shadow of doubt Galle Fort is the best preserved and protected fortified walled city in the whole of South Asian region that should be protected at all cost, the release said.

All Sri Lankans, lovers of heritage and archaeological values of all over the World are confident that the present government will pass legislation to safeguard and protect the UNESCO and COSMOS sites without encouraging and tolerating vandalism vice centres/dens, casinos, hotels, liquor bars etc. in the midst of educational, religious, cultural and residential houses within the 38 hectares of Galle Fort.

GFWPHS has appealed to the President, Prime Minister and the Minister of Cultural Affairs and National Heritage to take immediate action before the situation goes out of control.

Southerners have great confidence that the present government will pass the immediate legislation to cover all loopholes, the release said.
