Efforts to encourage farmers to use organic fertiliser

by Florence Wickramage

The Environment and Natural Resources Ministry is making special efforts to encourage farmers to use organic fertiliser in their paddy fields and cultivations instead of chemical fertilisers.

Stepping into this field with the production of eco-friendly compost manure and organic manure by using solid waste is the Bernus Institute which Environment and Natural Resources Minister A.H.M.Fowzie visited recently.

At discussions held with officials during the inspection tour the Minister was informed that compost manure is made from 650 tons of solid waste and other waste collected per day by the Institute and that Organic manure is made by mixing certain chemicals into the compost manure.

Minister Fowzie was also informed that the Institute was striving to increase the production capacity of the compost manure.

According to officials the manure produced by this Institute is being used for all types of fruit and vegetable cultivations and a special manure for tea plantations. This eco-friendly manure causes no harmful effects to the environment.

Arrangements have now being made to produce these manures by collecting solid and other waste from the Municipal limits of Colombo, Dehiwela and Mount Lavinia.

Minister Fowzie on being informed that the waste dumping areas were insufficient promised to look into this matter and allocate suitable dumping grounds from which waste could be collected for the purpose of producing compost and organic manure.

The Mayor of Colombo Prasanna Gunawardhana accompanied the Minister on his visit to the Bernus Institute.
