President appoints two key bodies President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has appointed a Strategic Enterprise Management Agency and a National Council for Economic Development under powers vested in her by the Constitution. The members appointed to SEMA are Mano Tittawella (Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Agency), B. R. L. Fernando, Lalith de Mel, Nihal Fonseka, J. Bandaranayake and Rajan Britto. The Members appointed to the NCED are Dr. P. B. Jayasundera (Chairman and Secretary General of the Council) Prof. W. D. Lakshman, Sunil Mendis, Mano Tittawella, Mahesh Amalean and Harry Jayewardene. The SEMA appointed in terms of the powers vested in her under Article 33 of the Constitution is with a view to facilitate and ensure the efficient management of strategic enterprises in Sri Lanka the Presidential Secretariat said in a press release yesterday. This is in accordance with a UPFA manifesto promise not to privatize strategic enterprises, but to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Sri Lankan economy by putting these enterprises on par with their private sector counterparts. This will be achieved by improving and consolidating the financial strength and commercial viability of these enterprises. Meanwhile the NCED vested in the President under Article 33 of the Constitution is to facilitate and assist the Government in the effective implementation of its policies and development programmes. According to press release from the Presidential Secretariat the establishment of a National Council for Economic Development is in accordance with a UPFA manifesto promise, to ensure that Ministries and Government Agencies function in a coherent manner towards achieving the development goals of the country, by coordinating their activities. The NCED is also tasked with eliminating all administrative impediments obstructing or delaying progress. The Council will help translate the manifesto into a comprehensive action plan. |
