Army in sensational win over Kandy SC

The Sri Lanka Army came up with a stupendous performance to beat the mighty Kandy Sports Club by 20 points to 19 at Galle Face on Saturday.

The soldiers dominated possession with skipper Rajapakse getting the better of his vis-a-vis Mohamed Buksh in the set scrums while the Army duo of Nishantha Jayasuriya and Saman Madurasinghe held sway in the line outs. The Army forwards came up with a terrific display with Rajapakse, Kotalawela, Jayasuriya, Madurasinghe, Karunaratne and Sujith playing like terriers to outplay their famed counterparts in the loose.

Former Havelocks and Navy player Sharm Pradeep who occupied the pivotal fly half berth played a key role in their success contributing 10 points by firing across two penalties and making two conversions. In addition he set the three quarters in motion at every turn to make the maximum use of the 'good ball' which came their way.

Kandy SC launched an all out assault during the last 10 minutes but could not penetrate the rock hard soldiers defence. On one occasion winger Sanjeeva Jayasinghe dashed through 40 metres before he was brought down in the nick of time by an Army defender. Kandy SC could have pulled off the match in injury time when they were awarded a 40-metre penalty but Nalaka Weerakkody's kick went astray much to the dismay of their supporters.

CR in impressive win

The Ceylonese Rugby and Football Club turned in a dazzling display of open rugby to score a convincing 32-3 win over the Colombo Hockey and Football Club on Saturday.

The CR halves combination of Zulki Hamid and Asanga Rodrigo hit it off smoothly which saw centres Kaluarachchi and Loganaitoga punching holes in the CH defence with some hard running while on the wing Kenyan International Dennis Mwanga stood out with his power-packed runs with full back Dinuk de S. Wijeyaratne joining the line to form the overlap.

The powerful CH forwards missed the services of their number eight Dushanth Lewke and lacked the firepower to match upto the CR 'eight'. To add to their woes full back Nalin Dissanayake gave a pathetic display.

He was suspect against the high ball and 'knocked on' constantly centre Jimmy Bolokoro made some powerful runs but lacked support from the rest of the threes.
