Wijewardene Memorial Awards Ceremony says : Govt will take steps to increase number of libraries by Chamikara Weerasinghe Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse yesterday said that the Government would take steps to increase the number of libraries in the country. Rajapakse said that the Government had decided to set up libraries and expand library services in a country-wide program to promote a reading nation. He was speaking at the D. R. Wijewardene Memorial Awards Ceremony held at the BMICH where he was the Chief guest. Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was the Guest of honour on this occasion. Admitting about the shortage of libraries in the country and the seriousness of this problem, Rajapakse said that the situation was "horrendous". He said it had been learned that the country has as few as 1,300 public libraries. "We have about 10,000 schools, but we have only 6,000 school libraries," he pointed out. Under the circumstances, we felt that it was our duty to improve the existing libraries besides building new ones in order to build an efficient library net-work. The D. R. Wijewardene Memorial Award was presented to S. N. R. Bandara for the manuscript of a novel "Ulkapatha". |
