Shemal Fernando promoted Commodore President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has promoted Captain Shemal Fernando to the rank of Commodore in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Navy with immediate effect. At 44, he becomes one of the youngest naval officers to be elevated to the flag rank. In the field of sports, Commodore Fernando has been an inspiration and mentor to many athletes, officials and coaches over the years and has won the admiration of the athletic fraternity as a trail-blazer who renders yeoman but 'silent services' for the uplift of track and field in Sri Lanka. He has been in the ExCo of the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka for 14 years and presently serving the national body as a vice president. He possesses a fully fledged Masters Degree in Management and utilises his vast experience as a naval officer to execute his commitments in sports arena with utmost dedication and devotion. A product of Royal College, Colombo, he joined the Sri Lanka Navy as a Cadet Officer in 1979 and graduated from the Naval War College of the United States in 1984. He holds fellowship of the Chartered Management Institute, United Kingdom and membership of three professional bodies of Sri Lanka. |
