Hutch says "hellooooo" to Colombo The international GSM mobile brand Hutch was launched in Colombo last week. The Hutch brand belongs to Hong Kong based Hutchison Whampoa Group. Hutchison today has approximately 11 million subscribers, comprising approximately 10 million 2G and 1 million 3G subscribers. In India, Hutch operations now service over 4.8 million customers. Hutch bringsforth the proposition of enabling Colombo's customers "to say what they want, the way they want" without being constantly concerned of the call charges, particularly for incoming calls. The Hutch service aims at offering value to the subscriber. As such the service was launched by introducing one of the most affordable tariff packages in the island. The launch of Hutch in Colombo is the cumulative phase of Hutchison's national GSM rollout. Already operating a GSM network in the outstations since the year 2000 under the brand name "Rankatha" Hutchison services approximately 50,000 outstation households in 36 main areas covering nearly 450 rural towns and sub towns. This unique outstation GSM outstation expansion strategy was adopted by Hutchison having understood that the outstation people of Sri Lanka urgently needed telecommunication services. Although, national telephone penetration is around 12%, only around 4% of the outstation population have access to telephone services. While Hutchison is the latest GSM operator to commercially launch its mobile services in Colombo, Hutchison is confident that there are large sections of the population that are looking for a mobile service that truly fits their needs and budgets and Hutchison looks forward to fulfilling them now. |
