Special investigation into patient's death fall

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

Health care and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva yesterday ordered officials to conduct a special investigation into the Kandy Hospital incident where a patient is said to have died after falling from a bed.

Minister de Silva made this order when he visited the Kandy Teaching Hospital last morning on a special inspection tour.

The Minister had asked the Director of the Hospital to furnish him a report after conducting a full scale inquiry into the alleged incident.

However, an inquest conducted by the Judicial Medical Officer of the Kandy Hospital Dr. A.B.Seneviratne had revealed that the patient concerned had died following a heart attack, a Ministry spokesman told the Daily News.

Spokesman said, Minister de Silva who ordered to conduct an impartial inquiry into this incident had pledged stern action against any employee found responsible for the death, irrespective of their positions.

While expressing condolence to the bereaved family, Minister de Silva said the Health Ministry was prepared to pay compensation to the family if the patient had died due to a shortcoming of the hospital staff.
