Roofing sheet scam:

Panadura UNP councillor remanded

Panadura group correspondent

Panadura UNP Urban Councillor Tilak Wannigama who was produced before Panadura Magistrate Jagath A. Kahadagamage, in connection with misappropriating roofing sheets imported from India, under the Indian line of credit, was remanded till Friday.

The roofing sheets were to be distributed among low income families in the country during the former UNF regime.

Earlier, he surrendered to court through his lawyers expecting to make a voluntary statement.

The Magistrate also ordered Panadura police to record Wannigama's statement.

Wannigama's lawyer Vajira Kavisinghe in his submission to court, said, the Panadura Police on a complaint by a JVP Urban Councillor raided a building adjoining the Panadura Court Complex and seized roofing sheets donated to the Government.

Wannigama was alleged to have received his quota from the Panadura Pradeshiya Sabha. His agent, Sumanasiri Fernando kept the stock in a room belonging to Wannigama.

Fernando had allegedly distributed the majority of roofing sheets among the poor in Panadura and kept the balance pending distribution.

Meanwhile, Panadura Urban Councillor Muditha Samarakkody (JVP) had complained to police stating that Wannigama had not distributed the roofing sheets.

Police raided the building and seized a stock of roofing sheets.

During those days, Wannigama was hospitalised after undergoing a by-pass operation recently.

Panadura police requested him to make a statement, but he was unable to go as he was under threat.

Kavisinghe also produced a medical report about Wannigama's health condition.

Later, he surrendered to court as police wanted to record his statement.

Police submitting a further report, denied the allegation threats to Wannigama.

After submissions of the counsel and police the suspect was remanded.

The Magistrate also remanded Sumanasiri Fernando till Monday.
