Kandy Esala festival begins on July 17 by Kandy Special Correspondent The historical Kandy Esala Festival begins this year on July 17 with the traditional Kap situweema ceremonies at the Sathara Maha Devalayas at an auspicious time, Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyeratne told a meeting at the District Secretariat Auditorium. From July 17 to 21, processions of the devalayas of the Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama and Patthini will be conducted. This will be followed by the five-day Kumbal Perahera in which the procession of the Sri Dalada Maligawa will join from July 22 to 26. The Randoli Maha Perahera will parade the surrounding streets from July 27 to 31 and conclude in the early hours of August 1 with the traditional water cutting ceremony at the quarry of Getambe and return to the Maligawa in the day procession (daval perahera) towards the afternoon the same day. The Daval Perahera will parade the Maha Maluwa in three rounds. Kandy District Secretary A. M. L. B. Polgolla, DIG Central Province Nimal Mediwaka, Pattini Devalaya Basnayake Nilame Rohan S. Paranagama and State and voluntary organisation representatives also participated at the meeting. The Diyawadana Nilame also briefed participants about the facilities including security arrangements, health and sanitary facilities, traffic and transport facilities that have to be organised for the large crowds expected to converge in the Hill Capital. Arrangements are under way to telecast live the Kandy Sri Dalada Esala Maha Perahera through the Internet. All liquor shops and meat stalls will be closed in the Kandy Town and its outskirts during the festive season. |
