by Warnajith Sumanasekara

Kadawatha Police have busted a racket involving the sale of sausages and meatballs the expiry date of which had lapsed, discarded as animal feed and arrested a suspect.

According to Police, this racket had been carried out by a businessman who had purchased the sausages from a well-known company which operates a super-market chain islandwide.

Police have recovered a large stock of outdated sausages and meatballs unsuitable for human consumption, of which value is estimated to be over Rs. 150,000.

Already, Police have taken into custody two persons involved in the racket. Police said an owner of a farm in Kirimetiyagane, Kadawatha had obtained this outdated stock purchased from the said company's factory located at Mattakkuliya.

Investigations had revealed that this particular person had been contracted to obtain outdated meat items from this company. He had purchased a kilo of these outdated sausages at 50 cents and had sold a 100 g packet for Rs 40 and a 1 kg packet for Rs 100.

The raid was conducted following a tip-off received by OIC (Crimes) of the Kadawatha Police N.V. Lawrence. He said there were around 600 packets of different quantities of sausages and meatballs.

A 100 g packet of these sausages is sold in the market at Rs 85 and a one kilo packet at Rs 350. Investigations have also revealed that the manager of the factory had released these outdated sausages without removing them from their packets whereas he is required to cut those packets before issuing them. Police suspect that the manager concerned too is involved in the racket.

The suspected contractor had sold these sausage packets to shops in Kadawatha, Mawaramandiya, Grandpass and Peliyagoda. The suspects were produced before the Gampaha Magistrate and remanded till tomorrow (June 04).

Further investigations are conducted by OIC (Crimes) N.V. Lawrence under the instructions of Kadawatha HQI CI A.S. Nalaka.
