SLIIT to enrol over 1,000 students to meet demand for IT experts In a major attempt to fulfil the demand of IT experts in the country, the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) expects to enrol over 1,000 students for the next batch. SLIIT Managing Director and CEO Lalith B.Gamage said SLIIT is the leading degree awarding institute in the IT field providing education and training, conducting and promoting research and development and providing software services. "SLIIT conducts the B.Sc. Special Honours Degree in IT. It conducts the B.Sc. Information Technology Degree by Curtin University of Technology, Australia. Advanced courses in IT through main field of specialisation are also conducted. The IT degree program is four years duration with two semesters per year with multiple entry and exit options," Gamage said. He said students could exit the program with a certificate after successful completion of courses. " The Curtin University degree could be completed in three years. Over 110 students have been enrolled now. Candidates who exit the program at different levels can rejoin the program to complete the degree," he said. "We will start the first semester from January 2005 through four campuses in Colombo, Malabe, Kandy and Kamburupitiya," he said. SLIIT Chairman Prof. S.Karunaratne said Sri Lanka requires approximately 2,000 IT graduates per year. "SLIIT expects to provide over 700 graduates next year to fulfil this demand. This year 210 graduates passed out and more than 90 percent students are working in the IT field now," Prof. Karunaratne said. IR |
