Schools basketball gets a big boost from 'Zing'

The All-Island Inter-Schools Under-17 Basketball Championship conducted by Schools Basketball Association and organised by D.S. Senanayaka College which commenced on May 26 is sponsored by Samson Trading Co. who are the manufacturers of 'Zing' sports shoes in Sri Lanka. In this regard a press conference was held last Wednesday at Galle Face Hotel.

President of Schools Basketball Association Mrs. P.M. Kalubowila addressing the press said "Basketball at school level was lacking support by way of sponsors and that was why the game was not catching up with schools and also the promotion of the game was at a standstill.

She added that Samson Trading Company's involvement with schools basketball this year with the sole intention of promoting the sport is a big boost".

The sponsorship package from Samson Trading is meant not only for the on going under-17 championship, but also for the other age categories for boys and girls under-19, 15 and 13, she said. This week ends under-17 championship is played in four groups 'A', 'B', 'C' and 'D'.

The group 'A' matches are scheduled to be played at Mahanama College courts while the Group 'B' matches are to take place at De LaSalle College courts, Mutwal and the 'C' and 'D' group matches are to be worked off at D.S. Senanayake College courts.

Quarter finals are to be played at two venues on Sunday, May 29 at D.S. Senanayake courts and De LaSalle court while the two semi-finals and the final will take place at D.S. Senanayake courts.

Mrs. Kalubowila said that around 80 boys schools are involved in the sport and around 30 girls school paly the game islandwide. Earlier there were many teams that competed from Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Jaffna, but at present only Eastern city of Batticaloa continue with the game.

She continued to add that with sponsors joining the association as long-term partners would help promote the sport effectively with sponsoring company catering with low cost materials for the sport is a big boost to attract players for specially from rural areas, she said thanking the sponsors for kind gesture in tying-up with the Sri Lanka Schools Basketball Association.

Upali Silva Director/Marketing of sponsors Sampson Trading Company said his company's main theme is to promote sports while producing materials for sportsmen and women's needs at affordable prices. This is the only way a local company could help its country in a big way.

It is not only sponsoring sport that could bring a name for our products should produce results to all who use them. That is way my company thought of introducing the latest product 'Zing' specially designed for sportsmen at cut rates to schools sports arena. My company hopes to continue this sponsorship in the future too.

The winners of this championship will receive the DSI Challenge Trophy and Gold Medals.

The most interesting feature in these lager tournament is the participation of International Schools based in Sri Lanka.
