Easy passage for favourites on day one A total of twenty seven preliminary round bouts in eight different weight categories were completed on the opening day of the Amateur Boxing Association Intermediate championships which began at the Sugathadasa indoor stadium yesterday. There were four knock outs recorded with all favourites moving into the quarter finals by outclassing their opponents. In the light welter weight under 64 kg class event N. A. Nishantha of Sri Lanka Police BC knocked out S. Dissanayake of Peradeniya BC. In addition S. I. Rajakaruna of Sri Lanka Navy BC also overcame his challenge with a knock out against Lokuge of Veyangoda BC in the under 69 kg weight class event. D. M. Ratnayake of Pilimitalawa BC excelled in the under 54 kg bantam weight class event by overcoming G. W. Lankeshkumar of Sri Lanka Army BC with a knock out. H. B. Perera of Veyangoda BC also overcame his hurdle in a similar manner against W. H. Wanigasuriya of Seevali MV in the 51 kg fly weight category. In addition D. Kahatapitiya of Kalutara BC outclassed D. P. Wijeratne of Veyangoda BC in the under 54 kg bantam weight class with the referee stopping the contest in the second round. The quarter finals will be worked off today commencing at 5.30 p.m. (C.D). |
