Police quiz Ravi K.

by Sarath Malalasekera

Detectives of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) yesterday questioned former UNP Minister of Trade, Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Colombo District Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake for nearly two hours in connection with their investigation into the Rs. 2 billion roofing sheets scam.

According to CCD detectives, Karunanayake has denied that he sold the aluminium roofing sheets allocated to him to be distributed among the low income families in his electorate.

He has told detectives that the roofing sheets were handed over to Kotte Municipal Council member Anthony Perera Jayasuriya who is now on remand to be kept at the Kotte Municipal Council premises until he made arrangements to distribute them among poor families.

The roofing sheets were imported from India, under the Indian line of credit, to be distributed among low income families in the country, during the former UNF regime.

The CCD earlier recorded a statement from former Western Province Regional Development Minister M.H. Mohamad. Former Colombo District UNP MP Lilantha Perera taken into custody in connection with the racket was remanded till June 10 by Colombo Additional Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya.
