Cyprus Airways in code-share with Royal Jordanian to Colombo

"Cyprus Airways (CA) has announced the suspension of their flights between Colombo and Cyprus via Dubai, but maintains their presence in the Sri Lankan market through a recently signed code-share agreement with Royal Jordanian Airlines (RJ).

CA's Press & Public Affairs Manager, Tassos Angelis, said that the suspension of the flights was part of restructuring of the entire Cyprus Airways flight schedule. He also added that the operation did not perform as expected neither in terms of seat factor nor revenues, as a result of fierce competition and extremely low fares, especially on the Colombo-Dubai-Colombo sectors.

'Nevertheless, we still have faith in the development of this market, and we look upon the agreement with RJ as a means of serving the route for the benifit of our potential passengers. The code-share agreement with RJ via Amman, expected to be in full implementation as of May 1, 2004, provides an excellent alternative, with competitive fares and suitable connections', Angelis said.

CA's Manager responsible for the area, Stavros Kyprianou, said that despite the short duration of this operation, the airline has been able to establish very good relations with the travel industry and the traveling public in Sri Lanka, and looks forward to their support under the new code-share agreement, adding, 'we are confident that Allied Lanka Travels, in their capacity as our General Sales Agents in Sri Lanka, will continue to serve our interests in the country in the best possible manner'.

The CY/RJ code-share starts with twice weekly through connections between Sri Lanka and Cyprus via Amman and is expected to reach three in the coming summer months."
