CDL expands business on offshore engineering by Sudarshana Perera Colombo Dockyard Ltd (CDL) will diversify its business in to offshore engineering sector in addition to its involvement in current ship repairs, shipbuilding and heavy engineering. The new expansion is aimed at catering to diverse services required by the vessels in the region in the backdrop of emerging sophisticated marine activities. The company is also exploring the avenues to provide support to services and repairs for those vessels engaged in oil and gas exploration in the regional ocean. Managing Director and CEO of CDL M. P. B. Yapa addressing a press conference in Colombo on Tuesday said that his company would aggressively market its services and products in other countries to attract more businesses specially from regional countries. "We are looking for more synergies to make our establishment a vibrant, productive and efficient company in the region's shipping sector. Our prime focus would also be placed on expanding our shipbuilding business", he said. He also emphasised the need for the government authorities and diplomatic community to help promote CDL's products and services in other countries. He said that they are going to make representation to the government in this regard. Commenting on the recent performance, he said that CDL has been building ships to local requirements mainly to Sri Lanka Navy and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority. He said that curtailment in new shipbuilding by the Maldives and the decrease in the requirements of Sri Lanka Navy due to cessation of hostilities were decisive factors for the lack of orders in new building work. "We will enhance our products and services portfolio with innovative features. CDL also won the international tender for refit the Floating Dock No. 1 owned by the Indian Navy which is the largest single project, undertaken by CDL. The total contract value will amount to approximately US $ 13.84 million", he said. |
