Improving English in schools and universities

The Cabinet last Wednesday, 19th May, approved a proposal of the Education Ministry to launch a comprehensive programme to improve teaching and learning of English in the school and University systems.

The programme will address the importance of teaching Activity Based oral English in the primary grades, a continuation of what was started in 2000, using audio-visual and other aids, accelerated teacher training for English in all grades, strengthening the teaching of 'General English' at A/Level,and training English medium teachers at Grades 6-8. The Programme will also cover teacher training at the National Colleges of Education.

The Ministry will launch a special initiative to ensure that English medium books are of good quality and that they will reach schoolchildren well before the due date. It is planned to establish a new facility dedicated for training teachers to teach in English in collaboration with the University system.

Meanwhile, as a special project on 'Skills Enhancement of Undergraduates', final year students of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines will undergo training in English for Communication and IT as a part of the Tertiary Education World Bank Project. This will be in addition to a more comprehensive approach to enabling undergraduates of all disciplines to learn in the English Medium.

The primary purpose of this entire programme is to enable children from rural and disadvantaged parts of the country to get an opportunity to access English, which has been for a long time a privilege of a few.
