NYSC to be revived

by Maharagama special correspondent, Vehelle Piyathilaka

The previous UNF Government did nothing to strengthen the youth during last two years. They purposely ignored and neglected the National Youth Services Council and Sri Lanka Youth Club Federation.

Their aim was to close down the NYSC which is the only Government Institution established for the youths," said the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Jeevan Kumaratunga at a meeting held at the Minister's office at Sieble Avenue, Colombo 5 to mark the National Youth Day which falls on June 23. The executive committee of Sri Lanka Youth Clubs Federation and the staff of the National Youth Services Council organised this ceremony.

Speaking further the Minister said: "The aim of the UNF Government was to cause a natural death to the NYSC. The ex.chairman acted like a liquidator of the NYSC. 21 training centres islandwide belonging to the NYSC were closed down and the buildings were handed over to the Youth Corps. Sports, Cultural, Social and Vocational activities were stopped. Funds were released by the Treasury only to pay the salaries of the staff.

No country can prosper without using the young blood in the development projects. The creative notions and efforts of the youths should be absorbed by the development projects of country.

42% of the total population of the country are youth. Their rights must be given in the society, in politics, social and economic sectors.

"Recently I had a discussion with the President on the youth affairs of the country. Her wish is to reorganise the NYSC by giving leadership to the youth and comply with their projects and programmes. Hereafter the Sri Lanka Youth Clubs Federation should draft programmes which are suited for them and the Government will assist in fulfilling their tasks."

A memorandum prepared by the executive committee of Sri Lanka Youth Clubs Federation with the proposal to reorganise the NYSC and its youth activities was handed over to the Minister by the Secretary of the Federation Sujeewa Sampath. The Director, Development of the NYSC Piyatissa Gamage and the Assistant Director, Media Epa Upasena also spoke.
