by Florence Wickramage An Environment Walk led by Environment and Natural Resources Minister A. H. M. Fowzie will be part of the month long commemoration programmes planned for Environment Day which falls on June 5. Presiding over a meeting of officials of the Ministry, the Central Environmental Authority, Education Ministry and representatives of Non Governmental organisations, Fowzie said that the programmes should contribute to countrywide awakening of the public on environment problems. The Minister requested non-governmental organisations to have a close rapport and coordination with the Ministry in planning their Environment Day programmes. The Minister said that his Ministry wishes to implement its programmes with the participation of the civil society and stressed that the message of the need to protect the environment should be effectively conveyed to all including students, parents and the civilian population. The Environment Walk to be participated by a large number of people including schoolchildren will parade the streets of Colombo and will culminate at the BMICH. An exhibition on environment jointly organised by NGOs and the private sector will be held at the BMICH followed by a Workshop which the Minister will attend as the chief guest. |
