P. Amarasinghe has assumed duties as the Chairman of People's Bank. An experienced and innovative banker from the Central Bank with over three decades of service, he retired as a Deputy Governor of the Central Bank in July 2000. During his tenure at the Central Bank, he has served in different sectors and has held the positions of Senior Economist of Economic Research, Director, Data Processing Superintendent of Public Debt, Controller of Exchange and Executive Director before being elevated to the Deputy Governor. Amarasinghe, an Honours Graduate in Economics from the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya also holds a Masters Degree in Economics from Mc. Master, Canada. A fellow of the Centre for Developing Area Studies (Mc. Gill, Canada) and the Institute of Bankers, Sri Lanka, he has also served as Chairman of the Institute of Bankers and the Credit Information Bureau of Sri Lanka. Amarasinghe has served as a member, Task Force on Capital Market Development Steering Committee on Poverty Alleviation and the Industrialisation Commission. He has vast exposure and international experience in Financial Programming and Policy, Capital Market Development and Central Bank Policies and operations in the Money and Foreign Exchange markets. On his retirement from public service, his services were sought by many private and public sector institutions. He was a member of the Board of Management of the Post Graduate Institute of Management of the Sri Jayawardenapura University. An old boy of Nalanda College Amarasinghe is the Vice Chairman of the Sarvodaya Economics Enterprises Development Services and a Director of Sarvodaya Vishva Lekha and HNB Assurance Ltd. before taking up the new position. |
