Jobs in S. Korea for between 5,000 and 10,000 Lankan skilled workers

by Manjula Fernando

The South Korean government, changing its foreign job policy towards Sri Lanka has agreed to employ skilled Lankans instead of low paid trainees in their country in future. Thus, 5,000 to 10,000 skilled workers will have the opportunity to obtaining employment in South Korean industries and its booming production sector.

All arrangements are in place to sign the bilateral agreement in this regard between the Labour Ministers of the two countries on June 1, Chairman Foreign Employment Bureau Karunasena Hettiarachchi said yesterday. Labour Minister Athauda Seneviratne will visit Seoul to meet his counterpart Kim Tae Hwan in the first week of June to sign the deal, Hettiarachchi said.

Earlier South Korea only hired unskilled workers from Sri Lanka to be employed as trainees. They were paid less and received minimum welfare facilities than average skilled workers. "Under the agreement highly paid IT professionals and jobs in the service sector will be made available for us and the workers will be entitled for the best welfare facilities a foreign employee can expect, the Chairman said.

The FEB has made arrangements to conduct lectures for the selected workers, to give them an insight, on South Korean cultural values, the legal system and their political and social aspects to make them well prepared for life in that country.

The draft agreement has already been forwarded to the FEB by the Korean Mission in Colombo, for approval. South Korea has requested the Government to make sure the selected employees will not over stay or desert their workplace. Thus all employees will be required to enter into an agreement attesting that he will abide by this requirement.
