Prestigious Ceres award for President

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will be awarded the prestigious Ceres Medal in recognition of her longstanding efforts and commitment to international partnership and food security as a means of achieving a world free of hunger and poverty.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations(FAO) which minted medal states that the Organisation conferred this medal as a token of its esteem and respect for Mrs. Kumaratunga's commitment to improve food security and nutrition and to achieve the target set by the international community to halve the number of undernourished people in the World by 2001.

"It is in recognition of her efforts to foster rural development, food security and peace in Sri Lanka, her support to the international efforts to reduce hunger and undernutrition in the world, as well as her personal collaboration with the FAO in the 1970s", the FAO states.

The Presentation of the Ceres medal to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will be made by Dr. Jacques Diouf,Director General, FAO at a ceremony at the Sapphire Ballroom, Ceylon Continental Hotel on 28th May 2004. The medal has been awarded since 1971 by the FAO, to distinguished women who have contributed to the fight against hunger.

Recipients have included the late Indian Prime Minister Indira Ghandhi,Mother Teresa,Vigdis Finnbogadottir, former President of Iceland, Queen Sirikit of Thailand,Prime Minister Helen Clark of New Zealand, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh and late Sri Lankan Premier Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike (1976) and Philippine President Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo(2004-February).
