Film review : Fine treat for the season

by Karthiga Rukmanykanthan

Peralaghan - Liberty Cinema

Surya, Jyothika and Vivek in some scenes of the film

The real beauty comes from the heart and not from the appearance. Peralaghan has clearly carried out this message with the terrific performance by actor Surya. He has carried out this bulky role without any difficulties.

The story contains some uniqueness although the idea seems to have been borrowed from some old movies. Peralaghan is about a physically challenged young bachelor who dreams of marrying a beautiful woman like all the other youths. He is deeply depressed by his unappealing appearance with a bent back. He is aware of his weakness but continues to look for the woman of his life. When he meets her, he hesitates to express himself being afraid of her denial.

The movie also has a parallel story attached in which the scenes revolve around a handsome Surya who is madly in love with another Jyothika.

The inclusion of this parallel love story brings in a double role performance for the protagonists.

The only weak point is the old usual trend used to connect these two parallel stories.

The genre is a fantastic blend of hilarious comedy, touching drama and realistic action.

Marriage brokers

Chinna who likes to be called Prem Kumar is an owner of a telephone booth.

Although he is aware of himself, he keeps finding women through marriage brokers. He keeps rejecting beautiful women due to the inferiority complex he suffers from due to his unpleasant appearance. He is assaulted rudely by a ruffian who was sentenced to jail due to the verdict he gave in the court.

Jyothika's father, the police officer to the area, again arrests this man. Jyothika who is in love with Karthik, another Surya, is strongly opposed by her father.

Chinna helps Jyothika to communicate from his communication centre and this way he gets the support of boxer Karthik to fight back the gangster. In the mean time, Chinna meets a blind girl called Chembaham who seeks help from him to save her dying brother. Chinna helps them and becomes their close friend. He falls in love with her.

Operation

Chembaham is isolated after the tragic death of her brother and Chinna provides shelter to his beloved and arranges an eye operation for her.

To win her love Chinna conceals his true appearance. The villain returns from the jail and brutally kills Jyothika to death to take vengeance from her father.

After her death, her eyes are transplanted to Chembaham whose operation successfully finishes.

Chembaham mistakes Karthik for Chinna and embraces him when she gets the vision. On seeing this incident, Chinna gets more disheartened and disappears from her view for a few days being reluctant to appear in his true appearance.

Turning point

The movie also gives a little bit of suspense in the scenes in which Karthik chases Chembaham to see the eyes of his lover fixed in her. These scenes are introduced as a turning point to the movie but ends as expected. The movie ends showing how Karthik ties together the couple.

The highlight of the movie is the tremendous performance by actor Surya who has perfectly differentiated the characteristics of the two characters. He has carried out this risky dual role with ease. The character of Chinna is one of the characters which other prominent actor think twice before choosing. Surya receives a pat on the back for his brave attempt and for successfully accomplishing his task.

Through his movie, he has proved that he possess a great sense of humour. Like Surya, this is the first dual role for Jyothika.

It is the make-up, which has played an important role in differentiating her characters. She has also put little bit of effort but she shows a frozen face in areas where she requires to show some emotive expressions.

Sensation

Vivek who appears as the well-wisher and the marriage broker for Surya is an essential supporting character who creates a humorous sensation to the character of Chinna rather than an emotional one, which has already been shown in so many other movies.

Even though cast and make-up are the emphasis, it is the hard work of the director Sasi Shanker and cinematographer R. Rathnavel behind the screen which has brought out these aspects into light.

Music by Yuvan Shanker Raja is ordinary and he has provided the song "ambullimama" a hilarious tune with the voice of signer Karthik. Peralaghan is a fine treat for the season.
