Myanmar needs Suu Kyi for credible talks, neighbours say BANGKOK, Friday (Reuters) Myanmar's neighbours stepped up calls for the release of democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi on Wednesday, saying her role in constitutional talks was key to giving the process credibility. Indonesia said the National Convention, which kicked off on Monday without the Nobel peace laureate or her opposition party, fell short of international expectations. Thailand has formally asked Yangon to explain the absence of Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) from talks touted by the junta as the first step towards democracy. Myanmar's normally non-interfering neighbours are embarrassed by the junta, which takes over the chair of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2006. But it remains to be seen if they will take any action, diplomats say. Indonesia, which now chairs the 10-nation regional bloc, said on Wednesday it had hoped the convention, which is charged with drafting the constitution Myanmar does not have, would be all-inclusive. |
