Commonwealth urged to keep out Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Friday (Reuters)

Pakistani opposition parties urged the Commonwealth on Wednesday not to reinstate Pakistan while it was ruled by a pro-military government.

The call came ahead of a crucial meeeting on May 21 and 22 of the 54-member grouping of mostly former British colonies that will reconsider Pakistan's readmission.

Pakistan's Commonwealth membership was suspended after President Pervez Musharraf, the head of the army, took power in a bloodless coup in October 1999.

The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) of former prime minister in exile Benazir Bhutto wrote to Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon, urging him not to reinstate the country.

"We urge the Commonwealth that the matter of re-admitting Pakistan is kept on hold till the country is returned to genuine democracy and supremacy of parliament restored," the letter said.
