Nominations accepted for Uva, Central provinces

Nominations were received yesterday for the provincial elections in the Uva and Central Provinces by the returning officers of Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya Districts in the Central Province and Badulla and Moneragala in the Uva Province.

Commissioner of Elections Dayananda de Silva said the returning officers in both Provinces received 26 nomination papers from recognised political parties and six nomination papers from independent groups.

The Commissioner said there was no rejection of any nominations as all had complied with the Provincial Council Election regulations.

Thus, the total of 708 candidates vying for 56 seats in the Central Province and 318 candidates fighting to win 32 seats in the Uva Province have submitted their nominations. The Commissioner said nine recognised political parties and two independent groups have submitted their nomination papers in respect of Kandy district.

They are UNFA, UNP, USP, NDP, NDF, RJP, SLPF and SMSBP. In Matale eight recognised political parties and one independent group have submitted their nominations.

The parties are UNFA, UNP USP, UPF, SLMP, JJP, NDF and SMSBP. For Nuwara Eliya district, three independent groups and nine political parties have tendered their nomination papers. The recognised political parties are UNFA, UNP, USP, UPF, NDP, LP, SLPF and SMSBP.

Seven political parties and one independent group each, have fielded candidates to Badulla and Moneragala districts for the Provincial Council election in Uva Province. The seven political parties for Badulla are UNFA, UNP, USP, UPF, NDF, SLMP, and SMSBP. In respect of Moneragala district, UNFA, UNP, USP, ESMS, DUNF, SLNF, SLPF and SMSBP.

Receiving nominations to the other four Provincial Councils, Sabaragamuwa, North Central, Western and Southern Province nominations began yesterday, May 28 noon is the final day.
