However the Government would not exercise any control over such matters, Information and Media Minister Reginald Cooray said. The Minister was addressing a get-together of the Trade and Industries Association at the Thalpitiya Holiday Resort last Sunday. The Minister said that the adverse effect of advertisements has lead to the erosion of morals among the public. 'We have often noted even religious shrines are being desecrated through advertisements,' Cooray said. This has caused the degeneration of our cultural values which cannot be allowed to continue. Although certain countries in the region have introduced codes of ethics in this field most of them are not effective, the minister said. Awards were also presented to six entrepreneurs by the minister. Kalutara district MP Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, President of Trade and Industries Association Jayantha Samaraweera, R. E. Weerakoon and the Secretary G. Mahendra Perera addressed the meeting. |
