BoI will be depoliticised, more facilities - Anura Bandaranaike

by Nadira Gunatilleke

The previous regime has completely politicised the Board of Investment (BoI) by filling it with political appointments. There is a clique within the BoI attempting to weaken the Government by creating disturbances within the institute aiming to discourage investors, said Industries, Investment and Tourism Promotions Minister Anura Bandaranaike.

Addressing journalists after a ceremony at the Tourist Board to welcome new Tourist Board Chairman Udaya Nanayakkara, Minister Bandaranaike said the BoI would be depoliticised and provided more facilities to attract more foreign investors. The Minister said the hotel industry and other tourism related industries will flourish under the new Government.

"I will take every possible step to remove all barriers to ensure more tourists to Sri Lanka," he said.

"Nobody wants war. The LTTE certainly does not want war," he told journalists and observed that India has elected the Congress back to power. He said he will not tolerate bribery and corruption and there was no room for such activities in his Ministry."

I do not want politics inside my ministry and if I find that there is internal politics to disturb the peace in the working place, I will not hesitate to take drastic action to remove such elements," he said.

There are thousands of educated and unemployed youth and the country voted the Freedom Alliance to power with the hope that they would be given employment. "We will definitely provide them employment," Minister Bandaranaike said.

Congratulating Nanayakkara on being appointed the new Tourist Board Chairman, the Minister said the President goes through all appointments carefully. He referred to Mr. Nanayakkara as a very talented and dedicated person with a good knowledge of tourism.
