News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Tyronne Fernando joins SLFP Former Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando has on the invitation of President Chandrika Kumaratunga joined the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. The President made him a member at a simple ceremony at President's House yesterday. Mr. Fernando quit the UNP three weeks ago in protest over what he called 'a great injustice' at his being excluded from the 13th Parliament while being included in the UNP National List for the General Elections. He had been a member of the UNP for 30 years, has been an elected member of Parliament for 27 years and has held a variety of Ministerial positions for 20 years. He was also the Parliamentary whip while being in the opposition for seven years. He is a graduate of Oxford University. President's Counsel, a former President of the Cricket Board and the author of eight books in English and Sinhala. Mr. Fernando said that he wants to continue to serve the community honestly as he has done for 30 years and not to be forced to idle at home. |
