Wives of hanged killer battle it out for his millions

DHAKA, Wednesday (AFP)

Two former wives of a Bangladeshi serial killer who was hanged last week are battling to inherit the millions of dollars he accumulated during a lifetime of crime, a report said Wednesday.

Dreaded gangland killer Ershad Sikder lived in a palatial mansion, was reputed to bathe in milk, and enjoyed all the trappings of wealth until he was arrested and accused of murdering at least 59 people.

Now two of his former wives, each backed by different members of his family, have claimed they should inherit his mansion, money, and other properties, the Daily Star said. Sikder had married six times.

"My brother left property worth 16 million dollars," the report quoted Sikder's sister as saying. Sikder's execution on May 11 brought to an end a 20-year reign of terror in the southern city of Khulna, 136 kilometres (85 miles) from the capital Dhaka.

He was brought to justice after a former bodyguard testified against him, telling police Sikder ordered the death of at least 59 people and personally carried out 24.
