They stood like rock behind Sonia

NEW DELHI,

The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi's children, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra, today backed their mother as she decided not to become the Prime Minister amid vociferous protests from the party's central leadership.

While the newly elected member of Parliament from Amethi, Rahul Gandhi, said that as an MP he would like to see Ms. Gandhi become Prime Minister, he was quick to add that "as a son, I respect my mother's wish."

Both refused to say what Ms. Gandhi's next step would be after the Congress Parliamentary Party meeting was wrapped up late tonight with her plea that "if you trust me, allow me to take my decision."

Looking every bit as tense as everybody else in the Central Hall of Parliament this evening, they gave her full credit for turning down the post of Prime Minister and said it was her decision.

Would they heed the MPs' request and try to persuade Ms. Gandhi to reconsider her decision? Priyanka said: "We will go home and discuss it. ... she [Sonia] will think about it but I can't say anything about what her decision will be.''

Also, according to her, Ms. Gandhi's decision was not politics as was being made out, but in keeping with India's rich culture and tradition.

For his part, Rahul Gandhi said: "People have said all sorts of things about her. But the quality of a person always comes out. People will not believe that a person can walk away from the post of Prime Minister.

I am proud of her.'' About the Opposition's criticism, his response was: "The Opposition can say what they want. The country has given them an answer. Let them come out again; the country will give them an answer again.'' (Courtesy-The Hindu)
