Explore possible ways to safeguard Murali - Prof. Vitharana by Kandy Sports Corr. World record holder with the highest number of Test wickets Muttiah Muralitharan is not a chucker but it is a physical deformity from birth which makes people suspect that he is delivering the ball in an illegal manner, said the Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Tissa Vitharana when he addressed the inaugural sessions of the Tenth Asian Congress of Fluid Mechanics at the E.O.E. Pereira Theatre of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Peradeniya recently. Prof. Vitharana said that Muttiah Muralitharan is a national treasure and he has brought great honour to the motherland with his magical spells of bowling which has brought him a rich harvest of wickets and he is not only the highest wicketer in Tests today but is also the youngest bowler to do so and in least number of Tests which are three great achievements together when he broke Courtney Walsh's record of 519 wickets last week in Zimbabwe. Prof. Vitharana said that he must be safeguarded. Laboratory tests have proved that he is not throwing and it is certain vested interests which have branded him as a 'chucker' to put him down. We must not allow that to happen and this is an area scientists specialising in fluid mechanics will be able to help him in some way and we must explore all possibilities to help him through his cricket career. We can do this if we only try this. |
