JVP for negotiated settlement of NE conflict - Tylvin Silva

by Asela Kuruluwansa, L.S. Egodavita and Thilak Ekanayake

The return of war by the complete disruption of the peace process under the Freedom Alliance Government is the dream of the reactionaries led by the United National Party, states JVP General Secretary Tylvin Silva.

Tylvin Silva made this remark in the course of his public lecture on the theme "Can Diyawannawa drown the people's force?" delivered at D.S.Senanayake Public Library Auditorium, Kandy, last Monday. The seminar was organized by the JVP political council of the Kandy District.

The ethnic problem in Sri Lanka is a time bomb with Norway a white wire, UNP green wire, LTTE black wire and a thin yellowish wire. The UNP media keep on shouting that Norwegians whom you dislike are on line, pull out the white wire.

Thus the reactionaries want to see the time bomb explode, he said.

Tylvin Silva said that the reactionaries use certain media to create a public opinion that the JVP rejects the peace process. I wish to tell them that the JVP is working to please the masses and not the enemies, he said.

Explaining the JVP's stance, he said that the JVP is for a negotiated settlement but opposed to the Interim Administration proposals that betray the country.

He further said that the Freedom Alliance Government hopes to convert the Parliament to a Constitutional Assembly and the proposals for constitutional amendments formulated by the Constitutional Assembly to be referred to the Supreme Court for a ruling.

Following the Supreme Court ruling, the amended Constitution will be presented to the people at a public referendum to make it the first Constitution of Sri Lanka sanctioned by a public referendum, he said.

With regard to the question as to whether the JVP acknowledges the LTTE as the sole representative of the Tamils, Tylvin Silva said that this is a matter for the Tamil people to decide and that if the Tamil People acknowledge the LTTE to be their sole representative, the JVP has no objection.

Kandy District JVP MP Dimuthu Abeykone attended the occasion.
