Murali case: PM seeks Asian cricket support by Manjula Fernando Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse is expected to meet the High Commissioners of other Asian Test playing nations in Colombo in a bid to muster their support for a campaign in support of world's highest test wicket taker Muttiah Muralitharan. Muralitharan is facing a ban by the International Cricket Council on account of his controversial 'doosra' delivery. The ban was based on a report by the Western Australian University which studied his bowling action recently at the request of Sri Lanka Cricket. The ICC ruling came despite a recommendation from the university that he should be allowed to deliver the doosra. The Premier addressing reporters after his meeting with Japanese Special envoy Yasushi Akashi at his residence yesterday, said he intends discussing the matter with the Heads of Mission of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh since it was a matter of concern for all Test playing nations in the region. He said he would lead a campaign to fight for Murali, the world record holder for the highest number of test wickets. "I do not think there is anything wrong in me getting involved as a politician in this matter since Murali is a national asset," Premier Rajapakse said. He said he will be meeting lawyers today to obtain an insight into the legal aspects of the matter. Muralitharan is expected to meet the PM at Visumpaya, after his return to the country. |
