Misappropriation of roofing sheets in Panadura : JVP urban councillor complains to police

Acting on a complaint made to police by Panadura Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Urban Councillor Muditha Samarakkody on Wednesday the Panadura Police Headquarters Chief Inspector, R. M. J. Camillus immediately directed Inspector Pathirana of the MOIB to seize stocks of roofing sheets granted to the Government by the Indian government line of credit that had been hidden in two places in Panadura town area.

Police seized a stock of roofing sheets kept in a room in a private building near the Panadura Magistrate's Courts complex and Attorney-at-Law, M. D. Wijepala surrendered a person who kept the roofing sheets for distribution on the instructions of a Panadura UNP Urban Councillor Tilak Wannigama.

The suspect's statement was recorded by Inspector Pathirana on the spot in the presence of the lawyers. A large crowd and local politicians of Panadura Urban Council and Panadura Pradeshiya Sabha were present at the time when the suspect Sumanasiri opened the doors of the room of the building where the roofing sheets were kept under security for distribution. He made a statement giving all details of how he received the stock of roofing sheets, police said.

The police seized the stock of roofing sheets valued Rs. 70,000 and was taken to the Panadura police with suspect Sumanasiri. In Panadura town police seized a shop with roofing sheets and arrested two suspects. The value is around Rs. 8000. Police said the three suspects will be produced before Court on Friday and move for remand.

Panadura JVP Urban Councillor Muditha Samarakkody, Panadura Pradeshiya Sabha Opposition Leader, Nihal Devinda Fernando, Pradeshiya Sabha Member, Sunethralal Fernando and JVP Member Jagath Pushpa Kumara, the police and the lawyers watching the interest of the suspects inspected the stock of roofing sheets and satisfied that they were the donations of the Indian Government to the Government of Sri Lanka for distribution to poor families to repair the roofs of their houses.

Police said a comprehensive report will be prepared after recording the statements of Panadura Urban Councillor, Tilak Wannigama, Leelananda Perera, Vice Chairman of the Panadura Pradeshiya Sabha and forward to the Attorney General for his instructions. On the advice of the Attorney General police would take appropriate action against the three suspects who are to be produced before Panadura Magistrate, Jagath A. Kahadagamage on Friday.
