Lankanath de Silva, a former Director of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd has passed away. He was 73. Mr. de Silva was appointed to the Board of Directors in 1978 and continued in service until 1989. A popular character among his subordinates, he was keen to maintain a good welfare service for the employees during his period as the Director Operations. He has also served as Acting Chairman of ANCL. He had been a former Chairman of People's Bank, prior to his taking up duties at Lake House. He was the President of the Colombo Cricket Club and elected Life Member of the Hill Club, Nuwara Eliya. A past Royalist, Mr. de Silva received senior public school colours at the age of 16. An active social worker and ardent sports-fan, he founded the St. Michael's Boxing Club at Polwatte. He was a member of the Y's mens Movement and attended the 1963 Y's Men's International Convention in the United States. Mr. De Silva was also a member of the International Press Association from 1981. He leaves his wife Manel and four children. His remains lie till 3.30 p.m., at No. 30, Maitland Crescent, Colombo 7. The funeral will take place at the General Cemetery, Borella tomorrow. |
