by Ananda Pathiraja Over 5 lakhs of pilgrims are expected to converge on Anuradhapura and Mihintale for Poson festivities this year. Anuradhapura District Secretary U. D. Yapa has requested all pilgrims to behave in a cultured manner and abstain from liquor and desist from using polythene material during their visits to the sacred areas this poson season. He said the youth especially should not bring any musical instruments with them. The District Secretary said all arrangements have been finalised to provide basic facilities to pilgrims visiting Anuradhapura and Mihintale during poson. There will be 22 vehicle parks in Anuradhapura and 9 vehicle parks in Mihintale to cater to buses, lorries and other vehicles bringing in pilgrims and a nominal parking fee will be charged from them by the Anuradhapura UC. Parking fee from a bus will be Rs. 100 each and for a van Rs. 50 each. Police will assist in controlling all traffic. Mr. Yapa said 84 temporary toilets have been set up in the Anuradhapura sacred city for the convenience of pilgrims while the Mihintale Pradesheeya Sabha has been advised to set up temporary toilets for pilgrims in Mihintale. First Aid and Life saving activities will also be arranged jointly by the Police and the Sri Lanka Navy in association with the Colombo Life Saving Society and a batch of 150 students from Anuradhapura. A combined rail-bus service will be maintained from outstation cities to Anuradhapura and Mihintale and back by the Railway Department, Rajarata Bus Company and the North Central Provincial Road Transport Authority for the convenience of the pilgrims while a connecting bus service will be maintained by the Raja Rata Bus Company and Private Bus operators to Tantirimale, Avukana and Vijithapura. |
