Scenes from Ghilli

Making commercial movies was the target of many renowned directors due to the heavy income that was brought in by the accomplishment of these movies.

This trend slowly started vanishing but some successful films produced by big time producers and acted by prominent stars still continued to occupy the film industry.

The movies Saami and Doul fell into this category. Ghilli is yet another commercial movie with masala film elements. With its swift cinematography, stunt and editing the movie has been successful in the box office. Vijay has reduced his usual lengthy preaching and has tried to concentrate on his character.

The sound tracks of the movie have been merged with good beats. The story lacks innovation and the end is predictable but the fast moving scenes hide these weak points of the movie and confine the audience to their seats.

A movie might lack innovative story but if it constitutes some aspects like breath-taking cinematography, screenplay filled with humour and excitement and fine music, it could make a glorious endeavour.

Velu is the son of a Police Officer. He aims to play Kabadi, a traditional Indian game, in the National League but his father forces him to study and does not permit him to play the game. Despite all the opposition Velu plays and goes to Madurai without his father's knowledge.

There he saves Thanam from her uncle who had killed her two brothers for refusing to get Thanam married to him. The scenes, which show the tactics used by Velu to save Thanam, are thrilling and stunning. Here, the camera does its job by running behind the actors wherever they go whether it is through forests or inside water bringing in more excitement.

After saving Thanam from her uncle, Velu keeps her in his custody secretly in his house.

This does not last long and it is soon revealed. These scenes where he guards Thanam were supposed to be serious and exhilarating but instead these scenes have been added with some humour. The sets and surroundings give an environment of a middle-class settlement.

The case of finding Thanam comes to Velu's father. In the mean time, Velu arranges to send Thanam abroad. Thanam accidentally falls in love with Velu and hesitates to part from him. The movie ends showing how Velu wins the match by convincing his father and how Thanam wins over Velu.

The climax is inedible and has been inconsiderately filmed for bringing a happy end, especially when the heroine returns from the airport after having boarded in the plane.

Vijay who plays the role of Velu has changed his outlook slightly hence he looks different but there is not much change in his acting.

He is a hilarious comedian himself therefore, he does not require a supporting actor for performing the comedy role. He is also a spectacular dancer with beautiful body movements. This movie is definitely a consolation after the array of flops he faced last year.

Trisha is appearing in most of the movies released recently but shows not much improvement in her acting. According to the character of Thanam she is supposed to create sympathy and she does create sympathy but the director has not concentrated on building up the scenes from this angle.

Rather he has concentrated on strengthening the character of Vijay. In movies like this which give importance to the eminence of prominent heroes, the other actors are neglected. This might be a reason for not building up the character of Trisha. She is a capable actress as she possesses a photogenic appearance but none of the directors has yet worked on exposing her talents.

This negligence of the director cannot affect the experienced actors who do not depend on the guidance of the directors. This fits both Prakash Raj and Ashish Vidyarthi. Prakash Raj who plays the role of Trisha's uncle has performed his role perfectly without any difficulties.

The same goes to Ashish Vidyarthi who has taken up the role of a strict father. Lavanya who plays the role of his daughter is cheerful and entertaining when she fights with her brother.

The cinematographer Gopinath gives a new impression to a known story by swiftly moving his camera from various directions.

The sound editing by Sadagopan Ramesh adds flavour to the photography with exciting background music. The editing by V.T. Vijayan also contributes to the rapidity of the film. Vidyasagar has given some suitable songs to the movie. His music is also fast like the plot.

The songs "Apidi podu" and "Kokara ko" contain good beats. These songs have been pictured with artistic settings, colourful costumes and satisfactory choreography. If the director Dharani had concentrated more on handling the twist in the climax carefully the plot could have been strengthened.

The part where Vijay gives custody to Trishaw has been copied from the movie Majnu. This part is quite serious in Majnu whereas it has been made humorous in this movie. Ghilli is yet another commercial triumph.
